FAQ
Common questions
What is Arkestra?
Arkestra is a real-time audio-visual performance tool for Mac. It generates visuals that react to your music in real time — syncing to Ableton Link, MIDI controllers, OSC, and live audio input. It includes a built-in 3D renderer, ISF shader engine, timeline editor, ILDA laser output, and Arkestra Studio AI for generating shaders from text.
Is there really a free tier?
Yes — genuinely free, not a time-limited trial. You can build and preview visuals indefinitely. The free tier includes all effects, ISF shaders, audio reactive, Ableton Link, MIDI, OSC, Scenes, the 3D renderer, and the Echo plugin. Pro unlocks the stage: external screens, Syphon, unlimited high-res recording, MIDI Clock, and audio-in-video recording.
What does Arkestra cost?
Free to download and use. Pro is $199 one-time — perpetual license, all 3.x updates included, use on 2 computers. Or go Rent-to-Own at $19/month for 12 months: reach 12 months total and it is yours forever. Student and educator discount: 40% off. 30-day unconditional refund on all paid plans.
How does it sync with Ableton Live?
Arkestra supports Ableton Link, which syncs tempo and beat phase across all Link-enabled apps on the same network. LFOs, sequencers, and the timeline all lock to your session tempo with zero configuration. There is also the Echo plugin — an AU/VST3 that runs inside Ableton and sends real-time audio analysis directly to Arkestra.
Does it work with MIDI controllers?
Yes. Arkestra supports full MIDI mapping: CC knobs, note triggers, program change, and MIDI Clock sync. Any class-compliant MIDI controller works. Map any parameter to any MIDI input in real time, with no configuration files.
What about Arkestra Studio AI?
Studio AI is included with every plan. Describe what you want and Arkestra generates a working ISF shader or visual chain. Free users get 20 generations per month. Pro users get 150 per month. No API key required. Need more? Buy a $15 credit top-up with no expiry.
What Mac is required?
Arkestra requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. It runs on both Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) and Intel Macs. Apple Silicon is recommended for best performance with the 3D renderer and GPU effects.
I already own Arkestra 2. Do I pay full price?
No. Arkestra 2 owners upgrade for $99, half the full price, no conditions. Check the email sent at launch for your personal upgrade link, or reach out via the contact page.
